Mountain Xpress 2026 Mayor’s Race Questionnaire – General Election

What is the most significant disagreement you have with your opponent? And why should voters support your approach to this issue as opposed to your opponent’s?

I believe collaborative leadership, inclusion, and results are necessary and just. Collaboration and effectiveness are essential because Trump’s administration threatens us daily, Raleigh attacks our values, and local tribalism prevents safe discourse. I bring everyone together, not only the loudest or traditional voices; I listen and deliver on critical issues.

Recovery from Helene will remain an ongoing issue that the next mayor will have to address. What makes you best qualified to serve in this specific role and what will be your top priority for the city as it relates to recovery?

Recovery is a multi-year effort demanding continuity, collaboration, and equitable results. I’ve secured over $225 million through direct relationships with Washington, Raleigh, and the Governor’s office. With Trump threatening to withhold aid, those relationships matter more than ever. Priority: protecting every dollar for community priorities (water infrastructure, affordable housing, parks).

In terms of policing, where do you draw the line between public safety and surveillance? What role should Council play in the evolving issue around surveillance?

Thanks for acknowledging this is an evolving issue. Any line will move based on our community’s tolerance and needs. On public safety and surveillance I listened, dug deeper, and led Council to unanimously cancel our Flock contract. Role: accountability for public safety, regularly revisit decisions, require transparency and independent oversight.

We’ve seen a number of deadly shootings in our city this year. What solutions do you support for addressing violent crimes?

Many directly impacted residents call for a stronger police presence to combat a severe uptick in gun violence and because they do not feel safe letting their kids play outside. I continue to support: accountable relationship-based police engagement; paying officers competitively to rebuild the ranks; prevention by addressing root causes.

How will you address the affordable housing crisis in Western North Carolina and what metrics will you use to evaluate success?

I’ll protect and direct recovery dollars for deeply affordable housing, evolve our zoning to allow homes for working people, preserve existing affordable homes, and resolve disputes that stall progress. My effectiveness metrics include: the percentage of recovery invested (housing), units created and preserved, and residents protected from displacement and homelessness.

Help finish what she started.
